Three weeks from Grand Theft Auto 6’s launch, Rockstar Games is undoubtedly feeling the pressure. Co-studio head Aaron Garbut has admitted it before, adding that it can’t quite compare to “the pressure we put on ourselves as a team.”
So even after extensive acclaim from Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, he knows they can’t rest on their laurels. “We can’t just trot out something that people might expect, or that was the easy thing to do,” he told Edge Magazine in its new cover story (via GamesRadar).
“We’ve not compromised on the scale, the detail, the interactivity, the story, the open world. I feel like we’ve built a pyramid on Everest.”
Director of technology Phil Hooker also reasonably weighed in on how the world may react. “I can’t guess the public reaction. We’ve made what we wanted to make.” Considering everything that’s come before, seeing Grand Theft Auto 6 coming together like it has, especially on a far larger and more granular scale, we’d say the team has succeeded based on everything showcased thus far.
While there’s still an “unprecedented” amount of pressure, co-studio head Rob Nelson says, “It’s ready. It ceases to become ours, and it becomes everybody’s. Then, there’s a letting go.” Because as much as Rockstar has pushed the game to its limits, testing and iterating on every little thing while ensuring it’s all perfect, there’s no telling what players will do. And as exciting as that may be, it’s doubtless terrifying.
Of course, we’ll see for ourselves when Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19th. However, the journey may not necessarily end so soon, as reports claim that the PC version will launch within the first three months of 2027. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed or denied this, but if true, it would mark the quickest turnaround for a port yet.
