Grand Theft Auto 6 Team is “Nervous,” Says Co-Studio Head, “Wants Things To Be Perfect”

"It’s a hard thing. As much pressure as we feel externally, I don’t think it can compare to the pressure we put on ourselves as a team."

Grand Theft Auto 6’s Extended Look is officially in the books, and to say that Rockstar Games has met, if not exceeded, expectations would be an understatement. That doesn’t mean it’s sitting back and simply waiting for the pre-orders to roll in. After all, it’s a new title from the studio in a franchise whose last entry sold over 230 million copies worldwide.

When asked about this by IGN, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson responded, “No pressure,” with a laugh.

“I try not to think about it. You’re aware of it, of course. But I think we just have to try and make something that we feel is innovating on what we’ve done previously, evolving it while still making it feel familiar.”

But while there’s certainly a lot of pressure from fans, especially those tuning into the Extended Look, there’s even more from the team to push itself and ensure everything is “perfect.”

“It’s a hard thing. As much pressure as we feel externally, I don’t think it can compare to the pressure we put on ourselves as a team. Everyone wants things to be perfect. We are nervous! Nervous, of course, but also excited to see how people respond to this video and then ultimately the game.”

Lest you think that Grand Theft Auto 6 being so unbelievably massive is a first for the series that prides itself on the same, it’s “definitely a step forward in all respects for us,” says Nelson. “The size of the world, and how deep it feels. It’s a bit of a shock when you get in there, and you see the density of the traffic, the density of population, and the fidelity of their responses to you.”

Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on November 19th for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Even with this 26-minute-long Extended Look, it feels like Rockstar has only scratched the surface of what Vice City and Leonida have to offer. Between the improvements to gunplay and melee combat, the seamlessness of switching between Jason and Lucia, the sheer range of activities including street racing, base jumping, dirt bike races, and more, there’s a lot to go through. Stay tuned for more details and updates in the meantime.
