INSIDE
Inside might not be the oldest game on this list, but it definitely deserves to be called a modern classic. Playdead’s ingenious horror platformer rocked the industry when it first launched in 2016, and remains one of the best games of its kind five years later. A lot of that is thanks to its story and its atmosphere. Inside, like Limbo, tells its story completely wordlessly, instead using expressive animations and some truly haunting sights and sceneries that stick out in memory. At the same time, there’s so much left entirely to interpretation, especially given the unforgettable ending. A game that can manage something like that deserves all the praise in the world.
