9. Condemned/Condemned 2
Whilst the survival horror titans of the industry were mostly gimping themselves over the course of this generation, it took a completely new franchise to be properly frightening again. The Condemned games were two first person horror titles from Monolith Productions with a focus on melee combat. Fragile weapons, an obscured field of view and tense set pieces made for some of the best scares of the past ten years that far too few people experienced. It's a shame that the games both had pretty dodgy endings, but they're worthwhile experiences all the same.
