… OR YOU LOSE THEM IN THE FIRST 30 MINUTES
One of the ways sequels contextualize the protagonist’s loss of powers is by having them start out with their abilities, but then making them lose all of it pretty early on, or making something happen in the story that explains why the protagonist is forced to start from scratch. For instance, in Mass Effect 2, Commander Shepard died within the first 10 minutes and was brought back to life by Cerberus, which was why he had none of his older abilities when he came back to life.
