CRASH BANDICOOT TAKES ON MARIO

Crash Bandicoot was a big factor in the PS1’s success and its almost complete domination of the industry, and how easy it made toppling Nintendo from their throne look. Sure, there were a lot of factors, but having a cool platforming mascot who could go up against the iconic Mario was a big deal for Sony, just as having Sonic had been a big deal for Sega in the past. And Sony definitely capitalized on that every chance they got. Take this commercial, for instance, where Crash was standing in front of a Nintendo building and challenging Mario through a speaker to face him and taking potshots at the “plumber boy.” It was definitely… something.
