Opening – Prey
Prey had its controversies stemming from the cancelled sequel by Human Head Studios. It would receive a reboot from Arkane Austin that leaned more into immersive sim mechanics with multiple ways to complete the game. Set on Talos-1, it focused on Morgan Yu, a research team member for TranStar who partakes in various morality tests. The opening sees Morgan waking up in their apartment, getting ready for the day and getting a lift via air to the labs.
This sequence, set to incredible synth music, seemingly sets the tone for a chill sci-fi odyssey. However, during the testing process, the other researchers are attacked by the Typhon. Morgan blacks out, only to wake up in their apartment and seemingly go through the same process again. They discover that it isn’t an apartment, but a test environment that simulates a living space (air ride included). The Typhon have broken loose in Talos-1 and are wreaking havoc, and Morgan has to find a way to survive and escape.
Again, great for setting the tone, but not so great when you can’t skip it on replays. The music is nice, but you can only do the song and dance routine so many times when the illusion is already broken.
