Ellie and Joel’s relationship is at the heart of The Last of Us, and that relationship only exists because of Joel’s daughter Sarah and hear untimely death. Interestingly enough, however, very early on during the game’s conceptualization, Ellie was actually going to be Joel’s actual daughter. However, the team felt that their ambitious for the narrative and character development were being restricted by this relationship, and so they decided to change things up.
