Tess played a major role in The Last of Us, and was clearly a very important character in Joel’s personal arc, but in Druckmann’s initial ideas for the story, she had a much larger – and very different – role. She was, in fact, going to be the primary antagonist of the game, and was going to pursue Ellie and Joel across the country for a full year, before being killed by Ellie in a final confrontation. Ultimately, however, Naughty Dog decided that the story wasn’t making sense for her character, and decided to change things dramatically.
