God of War (2018)
The God of War trilogy ended on a cliffhanger in 2010 with God of War 3 but Kratos’ story was considered finished. Though finding some means of redemption at the end, the series always stuck out as a brutal, over-the-top and epic journey for hack and slash fans. So when the new God of War was first unveiled, it was a massive departure.
A new setting rooted in Norse mythology; more grounded combat; a radically different approach to story-telling with the single-shot presentation; and of course, the addition of Atreus. While some trepidation may have been present with fans, God of War released in 2018 to near-universal critical acclaim. It’s sold over 19.5 million units as of August 2021 with a sequel, God of War: Ragnarok, out later this year.
