Bioware Montreal – Mass Effect Andromeda
Upon seeing Anthem for the first time, many bitter fans called out Bioware for funnelling all resources to the online shooter. If it could get Anthem to look this good, why was Andromeda so terrible? The issue was a lot more complicated than that. Once again thanks to Jason Schreier’s reporting, we learned that Mass Effect Andromeda had numerous problems out of the gate. Forget that Bioware Montreal, which originally worked on Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer mode, was now in charge of an entire game. Never mind all the hurdles that Frostbite had for a game like this. From the outset, the studio had trouble deciding what kind of game Andromeda would be. Procedural generation was supposed to be an important part of the gameplay but was subsequently abandoned after a year. The creative direction was split in so many different directions. Trying to coordinate with other studios on different aspects of the game was trying enough. Anonymous sources felt the game was truly built in just 18 months despite a five year development period. Sometimes, when things go wrong, they go wrong all at once.
