You know those endings we mentioned at the beginning of this feature that might be only partly happy? This is one of those endings. Metal Gear Solid 4’s ending is definitely not a happy one- Snake is dying, and the world, even though it is free from the Patriots’ control, is in a sorry state. But at least one part of the ending shines bright with a hopefulness that is uncharacteristic of the rest of the game. Meryl and Johnny was, of course, no one’s favourite couple, but seeing them having a happy union at the end of the game, with all the survivors of the game’s events watching on with relief and joy, including Colonel Campbell of course, can’t help but bring a smile to our faces.
