METAL GEAR SOLID 5

Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain

We get it- we see you frothing at the mouth, completely outraged at even the slightest suggestion that The Phantom Pain’s ending was happy. An ending that on a meta level betrays the player, betrays its audiences, and one that on a simpler note sees Big Boss betraying two of his most trusted lieutenants in the most unpredictable fashion imaginable. An ending that has been called by many one of the worst, most unsatisfactory conclusions in any video game ever- a happy ending? But consider this- nuclear disarmament. In so many ways, that is the message that so much of Metal Gear is trying to send, that Phantom Pain itself is trying to convey. The meta game about nuclear disarmament wants to achieve the ultimate aim of a world without nukes, and really, is there anything happier than that? Of course, that then leads into the events of Metal Gear 1 and 2, which opens another can of worms entirely… but let’s not get into that.
