Bubsy 3D
Though the first Bubsy is remembered for being a clone of Sonic the Hedgehog, it did have some kind of appeal. We’re not sure what but it was there. The next two games were relatively poor in sales so when Bubsy 3D was happening, creator Michael Berlyn wanted the game to be a fully 3D platformer. The problem was that in 1995, not many games had attempted this and Berlyn himself had no experience with 3D tools. The result was a game that paled in comparison to a similar title, Super Mario 64, while critics hated the overall speed, responsiveness and controls. Berlyn later noted the game to be his “biggest failure” so it’s hard to say whether more time and polish would have helped.
