You can discover it through a Minutemen radiant quest (among other things) wherein a settlement will task you with rescuing a kidnapped victim. Kill the kidnappers, pay the ransom, do whatever and all is well. However, investigating into Dunwich Borers feels like a descent into madness. Flashback hint at an evil presence hidden within the surface.
