Diablo 3
The number of things that can – and did – go wrong with a sequel like Diablo 3 are too much to count. But in the midst of server problems, bugs and other issues, the development team’s tenets with regards to loot, difficulty and rewards were perhaps the most problematic. Legendaries were rare to the point of being stingy, not to mention dropping for the wrong classes. You needed great gear to play the more challenging difficulties but said gear could only be earned from those difficulties. Magic gear and weapons could sometimes be outright better than Rares. So Blizzard worked over two years and completely overhauled the loot system, added a new Adventure Mode and Nephalem Rifts as end-game content, released new story content with Reaper of Souls, and offered much more build diversity than before. Also no more Auction House. Hurray! The result was a Diablo 3 that stood as an exemplary action RPG looter, despite its many initial hangups.
