Terraria
First thought of a Minecraft clone in 2D, Terraria has blossomed into a sandbox worthy of challenging Mojang’s crown. Although, to be fair, if it weren’t for the NES-style sprite graphics the adventure-exploration title would seem a carbon copy of Minecraft on paper, with perhaps a splash of Metroid. But it’s that Metroid influence, the multi-layered exploration, which gives Terraria it’s edge, and whilst it started slowly it’s grown to be one of the biggest selling games of all time, eclipsing more than 40 million units shifted.
