The character action genre is brimming with games vying for the top spot among that group, but for many, many people, nothing will ever come close to Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja’s 2004 Ninja Gaiden reboot (other than perhaps its sequel). Brutally difficult yet immensely rewarding- that’s not a combination that many games have struck perfectly over the years, but Ninja Gaiden is definitely one of them. The game builds its entire identity around its combat, which is tight, mechanically complex, and demands mastery and skill- and, of course, is an absolute joy to witness on the screen.
