No other co-op title has swung so far between absolutely killing and outright dying out quite like Helldivers 2. It became a massive success despite numerous server problems at launch, and just when things seemed to improve, Sony smacked PC players with mandatory PSN linking that was eventually overturned. Terrible balance also threatened to derail the fun until improvements arrived, and then we got the Illuminate with its new mechanics and hordes of mindless Voteless. While it will doubtless have other issues, it’s an incredible experience unlike any other and proof that excellent gameplay trumps live service machinations.
