Project CARS 3
Slightly Mad Studios started the year off with the awful Fast and Furious Crossroads. But before that, it confirmed that Project CARS 3, the sequel to its acclaimed but buggy racing sim series, would be releasing in the Summer. Little to no information had been revealed up till that point (and no, claiming it to be at least “200 percent better” than its predecessor doesn’t count). But Slightly Mad Studios CEO Ian Bell did consider it a spiritual successor to the Need for Speed SHIFT series.
Project CARS 3 launched on August 28th 2020 and quickly saw mixed reactions for its more arcade-like racing gameplay. Parent company Codemasters revealed in its financial results for the first half of fiscal year 2021 that the title had “performed in line with expectations.” But despite debuting in fifth place for US physical sales charts, it debuted 17th in the UK, selling 86 percent less than Project CARS 2. The PS4 version launched in Japan and only sold 2,404 units in its first week. Codemasters and Slightly Mad Studios haven’t commented on sales numbers but the data that is available isn’t too encouraging.
