Sony and Microsoft had rejected Wii tech – Report

Kutaragi: "Well, can you produce this for 50 cents?"

The Wii motion tech was first offered to Sony and Microsoft, according to a new report that has surfaced. They probably regret it now seeing as how Nintendo adopted the technology and pushed out the best selling current gen system in the Wii.

They tried to cash in on the motion bandwagon with the Move and Kinect but they weren’t that successful. The patent for the tech was held by Tom Quinn who went to Microsoft and Sony first.

“The meeting went terribly. The attitude I got from them was that if they wanted to do motion control, they would do it themselves and make a better job of it. I mean, they were just rude,” he said on the behavior of Microsoft.

“In fact, the meeting went so terribly that one of the executives came over to me afterwards and apologized on behalf of others. I remember him saying how this was not how Microsoft should be engaging with potential partners.”

Even the legendary Ken Kutaragi was not interested in the tech.

“Kutaragi comes in, introduces himself, sits down and – I swear this is true – he closed his eyes the moment I started showing my pitch,” he said.

“It was awkward, very awkward, but I still asked him for feedback and he said, ‘well, can you produce this for 50 cents?’ I laughed and explained that would be impossible, so again I left empty handed.”

But Nintendo was responsive and it was clear how Sony and Microsoft didn’t care about his pitch.

“Looking back at the whole thing, it’s crazy how blind Sony and Microsoft were. They were busy beating the crap out of each other and didn’t consider Nintendo a strong competitor any more.”
