Bioshock Infinite to use Steamworks, Box art design explained

Bioshock Infinite boxart looks a bit like Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. A lot of people were displeased at the design choice saying it’s generic, “lolol dude with a gun”, etc. So what should they have done? Is this box art really that bad?

Well Ken Levine has defended it saying it was done for a reason. According to me, people who were planning to buy Bioshock infinite would do it anyway, and the only people whining are ones who aren’t sure whether they will buy it or not.

The box art is actually meant for the uninformed people out there, people who don’t visit big gaming website, people who don’t have a clue about the Bioshock franchise. Ken Levine told Chris Kohler of Wired that it is a small price for the hardcore gamer to pay, and they need to be successful and sell as many copies as they can to keep making games such as these.

“We went and did a tour… around to a bunch of, like, frathouses and places like that. People who were gamers. Not people who read IGN. And [we] said, so, have you guys heard of BioShock? not a single one of them had heard of it,” he said.

“I looked at the cover art for Bioshock 1, which I was heavily involved with and love, I adored. And I tried to step back and say, if I’m just some guy, some frat guy, I love games but don’t pay attention to them… if I saw the cover of that box, what would I think? And I would think, this is a game about a robot and a little girl. That’s what I would think. I was trying to be honest with myself. Trust me, I was heavily involved with the creation of those characters and I love them.”

“I wanted the uninformed, the person who doesn’t read IGN… to pick up the box and say, okay, this looks kind of cool, let me turn it over. Oh, a flying city. Look at this girl, Elizabeth on the back. Look at that creature. And start to read about it, start to think about it.

He also added that they aren’t ignoring the hardcore gamer at all, the money they have spent on press and conversations with games journalists are something only intended for the hardcore fans. Box art are for people who don’t belong to this group.

Another good news is that the game will not use GFWL on the PC and isntead will use Steamworks, so yay. Pre-order the game from Green Man Gaming or something like that. The game comes out next year for the PS3, Xbox and PC, and a slight delay was announced recently.
