Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is a first-person shooter that has a main theme of popping up skulls with a Sniper, as the game’s name implies of course.

It’s the sequel to Sniper: Ghost Warrior, which flew under of the radar of many gaming websites, but managed to sell 2 million eventually due to strong word of mouth.

The game is being developed by City Interactive, who developed the previous game as well, and it is running on Crytek’s CryEngine 3. Visual proficiency is one of the main factors that the developers are aiming for in the game.

It is published by City Interactive in all regions and saw release on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. [reference]

Development

The game has been confirmed to run on the CryEngine 3, while its predecessor ran on the CryEngine 2. This has allowed them to make one of the most immersive games ever, and making the player part of the world is one of the goals for the team at City Interactive.

In an interview with GamingBolt, producer Lukasz Janczuk revealed a lot of interesting things about the game.

“The great support that we are receiving from Crytek and the advanced features the engine allows us to use are remarkable. CryENGINE also has great potential in making console games. Many procedures that may have been tricky in the past are now easily implemented. On top of that, the team that works with the engine frequently say they can finally spread their wings to the fullest extent. CE3 = win.”

“We aimed for the stars with Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 and I think the final product will certainly match and even surpass many of the current GPU killers on the market.”

They have also made it so that it is a stable experience on all platforms. They also mentioned that linearity is not an issue because plenty of movies are linear. They want to tell a story and open world isn’t something that is mandatory for that.

“We don’t see linearity as an issue. Books are linear, movies are linear, 80% of the biggest games on the planet are somehow linear. We’re here to tell a story and to make the players’ brains generate fun – you don’t need a giant open world to do that. That doesn’t mean Ghost Warrior 2 is a corridor shooter! We will have open landscapes for you to traverse but this will not be a sandbox type of game.”

They are collaborating with Crytek on CryEngine 3 to get the most out of the engine. The screenshots they have released shows how good this game actually looks. [reference]

Gameplay

The main objective is to snipe the hell out of people and things, and there are many sniper weapons and other things available at your disposal to do the required job. The development team has enhanced the AI from the first game and it’s one of the things that will make it more amazing, they claim.

Enemy AI. That’s been made entirely from scratch. We wanted to emphasize the distance that divides you and your foes, this is a sniper game after all. The AI tackles problems of reducing the distance to you via laying smoke screens, flanking you etc.

“We also decided not to include “assault missions” this time around, so you won’t run around with assault rifles and engage in CQB. This was decided based on the voice of the community; we respect and take into consideration what they say. The players want an authentic modern sniper experience and that is what we are going to deliver.” [reference]

The gameplay mechanics are classic first person shooter oriented and the game is not really that different from other first person shooters except there is more emphasis on sniping here. The game will include a multiplayer mode where players take the role of a sniper and engage others in sniping duels. There were plans to include a co-op mode into the game, but this was abandoned by the developers due to time constraints.

Plot

Anderson, the name is Anderson. The player takes control of Private Security Consultant Captain Cole Anderson in various missions around the world including urban fighting in Sarajevo, tropical jungles in Burma and the mountains of Tibet. The story will be 10 hours long and will also feature a fully fledged multiplayer mode.

“We want to deliver a solid 10h gameplay campaign and a competitive multiplayer experience in one package. Ghost Warrior 2 will feature something for everyone – shooting mechanics customization for the hardcore player, an easy “red dot marks the spot” system for the more casual sniper and a balanced mode for gamers who, depending on their mood, feel a little bit of both,” producer Lukasz Janczuk revealed to GamingBolt.

“We have a strong story we want the player to remember. It’s not a tale of a generic soldier on a generic mission – the main character’s name is Anderson, Mr. Anderson  , and he’ll be involved in some serious personal stuff like deception and life and death decisions.” [reference]

Marketing

City Interactive also announced the contents of their Collector’s and Limited Edition versions of Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2. Slated for a 21 August release on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC, the game will have two ‘premium’ editions, each providing a multitude of bonuses and extras.

The Collector’s Edition will not only come in a limited edition folded-box, the box itself holds a whole host of delicious extras: a steelbook copy of the game, a ‘Sniper Tactics and History’ hardback book, an artbook, the game’s official soundtrack, two in-game sniper rifles for multiplayer and four exclusive multiplayer characters.

The slimmer Limited Edition comes in O-card packaging and includes the ‘Thread cutter’ in-game sniper for multiplayer modes, as well as a fifth multiplayer character, Major Vladic. [reference]
