Crytek loves free-to-play model, wants to transition entirely

rytek has been sounding the free-to-play horn for a lot of years now. They really like the business model and want to transition entirely to that soon. They have always said that they wanted to deliver AAA games with a free-to-play model.

They currently have a F2P title for the Asian regions called Warface which has had 5 million users and has become pretty successful.

In an interview with Venturebeat, Cevat Yerli, CEO of Crytek said: “We decided five or six years ago that we want to marry the quality of triple-A games with the business model of free-to-play. And at that time, we decided some other games, in some of our other studios, would head in this direction.

“But we kept pushing the quality bar higher on our console business, which is the main dominating business for the Western world, but we are observing, plainly – and we see this already with Warface – that the free-to-play market is on the rise. I think over the next two to three years, free-to-play is going to rival retail with quality games like Warface.”

They are also going to try to push that model onto consoles.

“We’re looking at free-to-play as a force that drives our growth and world-domination plans. So we have quite a few console titles in our pipeline that are [traditional retail games] while we investigate free-to-play on consoles. But our primary goal is to make triple-A free-to-play games for the world market and transition entirely to that,” Yerli added.

Their latest game called Crysis 3, which is not a F2p title, will be released on March for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
