Crytek CEO: Team Fortress 2 is “not quite free-to-play”

"It's on the way to be there."

Team Fortress 2 is one the most popular free-to-play titles on the market, and there’s no denying that the game has become synonymous with user created content and micro transactions. Crytek, the developer of the Crysis series has also officially stated that all their future projects will embrace the free-to-play model. However, the company’s CEO feels that Team Fortress isn’t the epitome of free-to-play games. Speaking in an interview with PCGamesN

“I kind of think it’s a 70% free to play title. It’s on the way to be there, it’s a good model and it works for them, but there is still pay to win there and I don’t like that.”

He further added :“There’s some great experiment there, with user-generated content, but you buy items. You have to buy items… A free to play game doesn’t allow you to sell items. This is the issue I have with that. We would allow communities to create items for virtual currency, but you can’t really go with commercial items because that’s pay to win.”

There are hundreds of items found on the TF2 store created by the community, for the community. While some of them are purely cosmetic, others grant some various bonuses which does grant a slight edge to those who possess them. However, one should also take note that items are also randomly dropped in games and players can build up an arsenal by investing a bit of time or by trading the ones they don’t want via Steam’s trading system.

We believe Dota 2 to be the epitome of Free-to-play games, absolutely nailing the formula. The base game is entirely free, and the items offered on the store are purely cosmetic with absolutely no impact on gameplay. What are your thoughts on the Free-to-play model which the industry is seem to be taking more and more interest in? Let us know below
