Thief’s Garrett not mainstream, director’s quote was misinterpreted

Earlier we had covered that the main protagonist of Thief called Garrett, was designed with the mainstream market in mind, but that quote was apparently misinterpreted by the media, the game director has revealed on Eidos Montreal community website.

The game director earlier said: “In the beginning he was more gothic; we toned down all the things that felt gothic, like black nails and things like that. We wanted to make him a little bit more mainstream. Yes, he’s a dark character, but we don’t want to say he’s a gothic one, even though the Victorian period feels really gothic.”

“He needs to stand in a crowd of your NPCs and he also has to stand with all the other heroes on the market.”

However, now he has clarified what that he had tried to say.

“It’s not correct to say that we’re trying to make Thief ‘mainstream’, or that we’re trying to make Garrett ‘less gothic’… This isn’t the case,” he revealed.

“I was referring specifically to a previous Garrett design we tried out internally and not Garrett from the previous games. Our early design went a LOT more gothic – with black nails etc – but we thought that this wasn’t true to the legacy of Garrett so we pulled it back a bit.

“Returning to something more true to the original Garrett is what I meant when I said we made him more ‘mainstream’, this wasn’t a comment about the direction of the game. I can assure you we’re huge fans of the original games and we’ve done our homework to create a game that maintains the essence of the original.”

We have some new images of the game as well. You can check that out here. The game will be released next year for the next generation consoles and PC.
