Keeping in mind that it involved real money changing hands as well, the Auction House exploit that hit Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo 3 and allowed people to duplicate gold in the trillions was quite the mess.

However, Blizzard is adamant in not doing a rollback of the servers (which would cause players to lose their progress). Instead, production director John Hight outlined a different plan on the game’s forums as to where all that seized gold, of which 85 per cent has been seized, would go.

“We elected not to roll back the servers in The Americas and are instead working to remove duplicated gold from the economy through targeted audits and account actions (as indicated above) without taking away progress that our players rightfully earned.

“We’ll also be donating all proceeds from auctions conducted by the suspended or banned players-including all of THEIR sale proceeds that we intercepted as well as our transaction fee-to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.”

Say what you will about the developer when they screw up – but you gotta give ’em credit when they do the right thing.
