According to data from NPD, Gfk Chart Track and Nielsen compiled by Ubisoft, the publisher saw its market share increase in 2012 along with Activision and Take Two Interactive. Microsoft also saw a very slight increase.

Apparently, based on the market share of boxed video game sales, Activsion’s share rose from 15.7 percent in 2011 to 19.5 percent last year. Ubisoft is at second with an 11.2 percent market share in 2012, compared to 8.8 percent in 2011 and Take Two Interactive is at 6.4 percent, with 4.8 percent market share the year prior. Microsoft saw a negligible increase in market share from 4.8 to 5 percent.

That’s not all. Based on the cumulated worldwide sales of Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PC games from the period of 2005 to 2012, the top 5 games are Call of Duty, Mario, FIFA, Wii Fit and Assassin’s Creed. Halo is at number 7, while EA’s Madden NFL, The Sims and Need for Speed occupy the last three positions.

Despite ending the franchise, Activision’s Guitar Hero scores above Halo. So let this be a testament, once and for all, to the popularity of COD.
