Oculus Rift Will Achieve Matrix-Level VR in Few Year “Depending on How Lucky We Are”

Sony and Microsoft could introduce their own VR headsets later, but it will only be beneficial.

Oculus Rift
Oculus VR has been rolling since introducing the Kickstarter for Oculus Rift, a commercial virtual reality headset for games. After a successful Kickstarter campaign and the induction of John Carmack as CTO, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey believes they’re on track to achieve “Matrix-level virtual reality” in a few years, “depending on how lucky we are. VR tech is still very crude, but it’s advancing rapidly.”

Of course, Oculus is looking to bring the VR headset to consoles. As Oculus’s Laird Malamed states, “From our point of view you just need an HDMI input, and both consoles have HDMI. My experience has been that to get access to the USB side, that’s typically where you need software level support and that’s where you need their help.”

This idea might be shot down if Sony and Microsoft release their own VR headsets in the future, but Malamed believes that the competition will be for the better. “They’re big companies with lots of resources. For us we’d say good. With John Carmack coming over as our CTO, we’ve had a great Kickstarter campaign, they continue to be great supporters, but we’re still a start-up. VR’s had a lot of failures in the past, and so the more people that enter the market is good because developers that ultimately have to develop the content, they know they’ll have people playing their games which is better for all of us.”

Oculus VR is expected to release in commercial form in 2014.
