Despite analysts believing that Nintendo should expand into other console platforms following its projected $335 million loss and 18 percent drop in stock shares, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata repeated the company’s stance of not bringing any of its franchises to mobile platforms such as smartphones and tables.

Speaking to shareholders, Iwata stated that, “The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles. It’s not that simple.” He also didn’t believe that the current financial situation meant “that we should put Mario on smartphones.”

But there’s no denying that Nintendo is in a financial situation. The Wii U hasn’t exactly benefited from a large number of third party titles, and the games that did release – including Super Mario 3D World and The Wonderful 101 – failed to ignite the sales charts. Could Nintendo’s solutions lie elsewhere, perhaps in bringing more third party games to its console, or has the Wii U simply been left to die? We’ll find out as the months go on.
