The Wall Street Journal Is Reporting That Microsoft Is Close To Buying out Mojang

Shit just got real.

Minecraft

You might know Mojang. They’re the creators of this little game called Minecraft. You might have maybe heard of it. Actually, considering that the game has sold 54 million copies across numerous platforms, and is now one of the highest selling games of all time, and a veritable pop culture phenomenon, you almost certainly have.

So, those guys? They are being bought out by Microsoft, The Wall Street Journal reckons. And for a hefty price too- a staggering $2 billion is supposed to be how much Microsoft is willing to offer these guys.

Certainly, that deal does not sound out of the question (if it does sound a little out of character for the temperamental Notch, the owner of Mojang and the creator of Minecraft), although it does raise the question- why exactly is Microsoft buying Mojang? Minecraft is now available on literally every single device on the market- PC, Mac, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, and even the PlayStation Vita, not to mention iOS and Android devices. So… why? Is it because Microsoft is so sure of the company’s ability to deliver another hit on that scale? Is it more about the psychological power of association? Is it because of the merchandizing revenue that Minecraft generates?

I don’t quite know, but it wouldn’t be the most puzzling purchase Microsoft has made, that’s for sure.

We’ll keep you posted on the story as it develops.
