After announced the acquisition of the Minecraft developer in September, Microsoft has officially closed the deal on acquiring indie developer Mojang. Minecraft has been the company’s best-selling game and still stands as one of the most successful titles in the gaming industry, especially given its relatively humble roots. The acquisition cost Microsoft $2.5 billion.

Xbox division head Phil Spencer announced the deal’s closure on Twitter. “It’s official, today we welcome Mojang to the Microsoft Studios family. We’re excited for the possibilities ahead w/the Minecraft community.”

Along with two key devs, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has left the company in pursuit of his own smaller projects. Though Persson expressed his desire to move away from Minecraft due to its booming success, he gains $1.75 billion from the acquisition deal due to owning a majority stake in the company.

Now that Minecraft belongs to Microsoft, what does the future of the franchise hold? Let us know your thoughts and comments on the same below.
