Sega Downsizing, Narrowing Its Product Lines, Focusing On Digital, PC and Mobile Games

End of an era.

Not too long ago, Sega was a giant and a titan of the gaming world. They went head to head with Nintendo, and for a short while, led the gaming market worldwide, coming up with pioneering games, and leaving an indelible impact on console gaming. Sega’s games and consoles in this period were absolutely amazing, perhaps matched only by Nintendo.

Today, Sega is a shell of its former self- its in house development produces far fewer games, and none of them even close to approaching the kind of highs achieved by their older games from their first party days, and badly mismanaged, barely able to keep up with modern game development.

This is taking a visible toll on the company, as today, it announced dramatic restructuring and downsizing, which includes 300 people being asked to ‘voluntarily retire’ in Japan, and Sega of America downsizing, and moving its operations away from San Francisco to Southern California. Sega of Europe, meanwhile, is also looking at severe restructuring, it confirmed to IGN.

The entire move is coming as Sega is looking to trim the fact, narrow its product lines, and basically double down on what it believes is the best move for it from a financial perspective- mobile and digital PC games, and merchandizing efforts.

This is extremely sad- I hope all those affected by this can get back on their feet again, and I really hope Sega can get back on their feet again, too. The world would be a far poorer place without them.
