Final Fantasy Type 0 Is ‘About Death,’ Says The Director

'This is reflected in the gameplay too.'

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD

Earlier this year, the ESRB shocked everyone when they announced that Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Type 0 HD, the long awaited western localization of the hit PSP game that has been remastered for the new consoles, would be rated M for Mature, making it the first game in the series to receive that rating. But one look at the game makes it very clear why- without being edgy, Final Fantasy Type 0 is a dark, disturbing game.

The game’s director, Hajima Tabata, told IGN recently in an interview that this was deliberate. You see, Final Fantasy Type 0 HD is a game that deals with death.

“I really wanted to do a Final Fantasy game that really depicted life and death – the value of life – in a much more mature, earnest way,” Tabata said. “That was part of the motivation for it. I think certainly in trying to depict that and figuring out how to show it in a serious way, the feeling of danger and the fragility of life, it requires you to depict characters in a very human way and make them believable as people. I think the game and combat system emphasised that fragility too, so after all of it came together it did wind up in the end being quite dark… but that was never the original plan!”

Final Fantasy Type 00 HD is due out next month, and it will come packaged with an exclusive demo for Final Fantasy XV as well. stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage and information.
