Sony’s Andrew House: Staying Ahead of PS2 Is More Important Than Rivalry With Microsoft

Sony seems to think the console wars are over and the aim is now to defeat the PS2 itself.

Andy House, Sony president, introducing PS4

Sony’s Andrew House has been quite busy of late, first announcing a new partnership with Hideo Kojima and also giving a rather in depth interview with The Guardian where he lays out what he feels are the signs of real success for his company’s PS4. In that interview, he made it pretty clear that his company shares the same outlook on the console wars as the rest of us. That outlook is that the war is pretty much over between the Xbox One and the PS4.

“We remain well ahead of the PlayStation 2 at the same point in its life-cycle. That, to me, is almost more important than market share and rivalry with Microsoft. The question is whether you’re growing the category overall, and whether it is vibrant.” House said. It’s pretty interesting that the exec is already taken to comparing his newest console with a much older one as a way to judge success rather than against his main competition. It’s also interesting that these days, it doesn’t really seem like there is a competition at all between the Xbox One and the PS4.

Event Microsoft has stopped closely tracking the units shipped because they are trailing the PS4 by such a wide margin. Of course, as we head into 2016, it should be pointed out that the war really isn’t over. Microsoft has talked alot about how good the company feels it’s lineup for 2016 is going to be. Sony would be well advised not to take its eyes off the ball as the calendar turns to the new year.
