Developers Still Aren’t Sure VR Is Going To Go Mainstream

New survey shows average consumer doesn't think so either.

With the launch of the many upcoming virtual reality devices coming in the next few months, Famitsu recently put out a survey that asked a number of average citizens and then 25 developers what they thought of VR. There were seven questions asked of developers and a handful of slightly different questions asked of developers. While Sony believes that all PS4 players are more than ready to adopt VR tech, it appears at least Famitsu readers are not quite ready.

When it comes to questions asked of the developers, the first was whether or not they are interested in VR. A whopping 94 percent answered yes to that question. That particular question wasn’t asked of the average reader so we don’t know who interested they are in the upcoming technology. What we do know is that both developers and readers believe that the price for the Oculus Rift is a bit too high. 86 percent of readers believe the device is too expensive and an impressive 88 percent of developers thought the same thing.

The other thing the two groups are almost in lock step about is whether or not the technology is going to go mainstream. 67 percent of developers don’t believe the tech is going to become something that is seen in most homes, at least not yet. That’s despite the fact that almost all of them are interested in working with the tech. What is bad news for the Oculus Rift and Sony VR is that 66 percent of the readers don’t believe it’s going to be mainstream either. We’ll have to wait and see what happens in the long run.
