Until Dawn

Last year, Supermassive Games’ long in development Until Dawn was a surprise hit, taking everyone aback that this game, which had been in development for so long, and which had even shifted platforms during development, had managed to be good against the odds. Something like this spoke of the sheer talent that the developer obviously has in spades- so it makes sense that people are now interested in the studio’s future.

Speaking recently, however, the developer hinted that their future may in fact be a multiplatform one- something that they are looking at out of a desire to broaden their audience base.

“We’ve worked closely with Sony for as long as the studio has been around, so the past eight years,” Supermassive’s Pete Samuels told MCV (via ThisGenGaming). “I’ve loved it, they are great to work with and we have a strong relationship with them. I think a lot of the work we do with them aligns well with what we want to do and where we want to go. But yes, we are an independent studio and we are keen, going forward, to bring our games to wider audiences than we have in the past. That’s what we are all about right now, and it’s an exciting time for us.”

This kind of a move isn’t unprecedented, of course- Sony’s own partner studios Insomniac (responsible for Ratchet and Clank and Resistance) and Ready at Dawn (the folks who brought us The Order last year) have spread their wings and sought out multiplatform game development. Over on the Microsoft end, Bungie and Remedy are two examples of studios doing the same. Let’s hope a move like this works out well for Supermassive.
