Naughty Dog Founder Says They Might Never Have Made Their Best Games Without Sony

Being an independent developer isn't always best, apparently.

Naughty Dog has built quite a reputation for making games like The Last of Us, Uncharted 4 and the upcoming The Last of Us Part 2. In a new interview, a couple of people in charge of the studio let it be known that they likely wouldn’t have been able to do what they did with those games if they had remained independent.

Studio founders Jason Rubin and Andy Gavin recently spoke to IGN about their decision to sell a stake in their company to Sony. Rubin said the company was already intertwined with Sony but the sale made their relationship that much more special.

“Our relationship with Sony was already so intertwined and magical and amazing that certainty for both parties made a lot of sense,” Rubin stated.

“I think – my personal life decision aside – it was the right decision for Naughty Dog. Look where Naughty Dog is today. As an independent, I don’t think Naughty Dog could have done that. I don’t think you’d have these games,” Rubin added, possibly talking about the games that have been released on the PS4 most recently.

Naughty Dog are currently working on The Last of Us Part 2 exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
