Star Citizen, Squadron 42 Now Using Amazon Lumberyard Engine

Based on CryEngine, which previously powered the game.

Cloud Imperium Games’ Star Citizen and its single-player campaign Squadron 42 will now be using Amazon Lumberyard, according to a recent announcement from the developer. The ambitious space sim was previously being developed on CryEngine, which Amazon Lumberyard is based off of (along with other technologies like from AWS, Twitch and Double Helix).

CEO and creative director Chris Roberts stated that, “We’ve been working with Amazon for more than a year, as we have been looking for a technology leader to partner with for the long term future of Star Citizen and Squadron 42.

“Lumberyard provides ground breaking technology features for online games, including deep back-end cloud integration on AWS and its social component with Twitch that enables us to easily and instantly connect to millions of global gamers. Because we share a common technical vision, it has been a very smooth and easy transition to Lumberyard. In fact, we are excited to announce that our just released 2.6 Alpha update for Star Citizen is running on Lumberyard and AWS.”

Thus far this switch hasn’t seemed to impact development too much. We’ll find out what it does for the release of Squadron 42 and Star Citizen as a whole in 2017.
