Hideo Kojima Scares Easily, Explains Most Effective Form of Horror

Death Stranding director believes the unknown is terrifying.

You probably read the other day about Death Stranding director Hideo Kojima the lack of horror elements in his upcoming game. Speaking to IGN, he discussed the possibility of making another horror game in the future, especially considering how effectively terrifying P.T. was.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like he ever will because, “I get scared very easily. Actually, this is true of Alfred Hitchcock as well as Steven Spielberg. Because they scare easily, because I scare easily, it’s actually easy for us to make something that is scary, because we understand what is scary.”

“But while in that process, we’re constantly imagining, like, terrifying situations so it ends up giving me bad dreams. That’s the reason why I don’t want to make a horror game.”

Of course, he did note the most effective way to frighten was to create something “slightly out of the ordinary” and “unknown.

“Slightly off, but at first glance, they don’t know what it is about it that is unusual. When you do something like this, it confuses the mind, and that becomes unnerving for the person who sees it.”

Death Stranding is currently in development for PS4 and PC.
