The Elder Scrolls 6: What Should Be The Ideal Magic System?

Should Bethesda change things up, or does the current system work fine?

Magic is, of course, an integral part of the Elder Scrolls series in so many ways. Be it in terms of mechanics, or combat, or gameplay in general, or even lore, magic is intrinsically tied to the series in so many ways. As such, it’s natural to wonder what changes or additions we may (or may not) see to magic and how it is utilized in The Elder Scrolls 6- whenever it comes out, that is.

I, for one, expect The Elder Scrolls 6 to go for a more complex magic system than what we saw in Skyrim. The magic system in Skyrim wasn’t bad by any means- it had all the various schools of magic, several branches to level up and perks to attain, with the added bonus of Shouts as well. But as anyone who’s played the likes of Morrowind or Oblivion would know, Skyrim had far more limited options in all these areas.

The Elder Scrolls 6 should, hopefully, look to give players more options, such as allowing for more varied and more complex types of conjurations, more deeply customizable enchantments, the reintroduction of levitation, and more. Basically move from what was in the past a more or less rudimentary system of magic and become a more vast one, one that players can sink even more time and effort into.

For instance, the addition of something like magic-based traps could add so much to several aspects of the gameplay. Players could use these traps in everything from hunting wildlife to using distractions during stealth. And of course, the more varied and customizable these traps would be, the better.

These are only a few examples that come to mind, of course. Hopefully Bethesda will choose to move away from the streamlined approach they took with 2016’s Fallout 4 and opt to instead give players more options and deeper mechanics to pour hours of gameplay into.

This article is part of our series on Bethesda’s next big entry into the world of The Elder Scrolls. Through this series we take a look at the possible new features that Bethesda can add into the next The Elder Scrolls game, based on what they implemented in the previous entries and player feedback.
