BioWare’ Anthem: Dev Talks About Lead Writers, Hearing Disability and Colour Blindness In-Game Options

A few updates from a developer at Bioware.

One of BioWare’s most accomplished writers, Drew Karpashyn, recently left the studio, and seeing as he was a major part of the teams that wrote some of BioWare’s best games (in fact, he was also the lead writer on Mass Effect 2), people have obviously been a little worried about what this means for Anthem. Studio boss Casey Hudson did move to talk about this last week and give reassurances, and now BioWare’s Brennon Holmes has done a little bit of that as well.

On a Reddit thread on the Anthem sub-Reddit, a fan spoke about how while Hudson had reaffirmed that Karpashyn had finished all his work on Anthem before leaving the studio, he never really mentioned who the project’s lead writers were. In response to this comment, Holmes quickly mentioned that Cathleen Rootsaert (Mass Effect series, Star Wars: The Old Republic) and Jay Watamaniuk are serving as the lead writers for Anthem.

Meanwhile, in a separate thread on Reddit, Holmes also spoke about features in Anthem that are meant to aid players with hearing or seeing disabilities. While the thread itself spoke about what Anthem can include as features to aid players with hearing disabilities, Holmes spoke a little about similar features for colourblind players. “We have the colorblind stuff up and running right now,” he said. “I believe the options are for: Protanopia, Deuteranopia and Tritanopia.”

Another user mentioned the how Bungie handles colour puzzles, commenting that they’d rather have more visual cues in the game that just colours, to which Holmes said, “Yeah, I can’t promise we won’t have any… but it’s something we’re keeping an eye on. We don’t want to have mechanics that are purely visual or aural (especially if the visual aspects are tied strongly to colour).”

Anthem is due out for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019, after it was pushed back earlier in the year for its initial 2018 release. Stay tuned to GamingBolt for more coverage.
