Death Stranding Requires “Collaboration From Different People” Around The World – Mads Mikkelsen

Antagonist also discusses the mo-cap process and how the game will be "ballistic".

Death Stranding

As one of the four showcase games at Sony’s E3 2018 presser, Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding is arguably the most mysterious. Despite impressive yet cryptic reveal trailers in the past, actual gameplay footage has yet to be revealed.

Add one more cryptic detail to the pile in the meantime as Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the protagonist in-game, says the game “needs collaboration from different people from different parts of the world.” This ties into other comments about the game having “elements of social media” though how that directly affects the gameplay hasn’t been confirmed.

Speaking to Total Film magazine (via Games Radar) during Cannes to promote his new film Arctic, Mikkelsen also talked about the motion capture process. “It’s been a little surreal, because obviously there’s nothing. We do everything. It’s mo-cap. But the storyboard is so immaculate.

“He (Kojima) tries to explain it again and again and again, and I thought I had it, but then this happens and I’ve lost it again. It’s too complicated. It’s too crazy. It’s too beautiful. It felt a bit like being in drama school: ‘Just jump in and improvising this scene. This is what happens. Don’t question it.'”

Mikkelsen does believe that the game will be “ballistic” especially since he’s “never seen anything like this”. “It’s wonderful, and I can tell from the little things I’ve seen – some things, it’s not done yet – but I’ve never seen anything like this. And he’s not happy with it yet! It’s going to be ballistic.”

Sony’s E3 presser takes place on June 11th. Death Stranding is currently in development for PS4 but will arrive for PC later. Creator Hideo Kojima has been teasing its E3 trailer though with such intriguing images as moss of all things. We’d be impressed if a release date was hidden somewhere in there though.
