CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 made a belated appearance at Microsoft’s E3 2018 presser but only to show off some game engine footage. While it offered us a look at the aesthetic, there was a feeling of expecting something more. However, if you paid close attention to the end of the trailer, you might have gleaned an entire statement from the developer.

Spotted by ShannonZKiller on Twitter (among many others), the message states that it’s been 2077 days since plans were announced to develop the game. The developer was busy working on The Witcher 3 and its expansions and thus had to remain quiet about details for longer than planned. Regardless, it revealed that the story, set in an alternative future for America, has megacorporations controlling all aspects of life. Despite the action, it was reaffirmed that this was a “true single player, story-driven RPG” where “you’ll be able to create your own character”.

Which is interesting because over on the official site for Cyberpunk 2077, it states, “You are V, a cyberpunk. In a world of cyberenhanced street warriors, tech-savvy netrunners and corporate life-hackers, today is your first step to becoming an urban legend.” Perhaps it’s possible to customize V into whoever you want while following a set story?

For now, the game will be released “when it’s ready” but it’s “definitely much, much closer to a release date” than when it was first announced. “It’s still not the time to confirm anything, so patience is still required. Quality is the only thing that drives us – it’s the beauty of being an independent studio and your own publisher.”

As for how big the game is, the developer noted that it’s “seriously big” but “To be honest, we have no bloody clue at this point in time. Once we put it all together, we will openly tell you what you can expect. And we promise we’ll do this before we start talking about any pre-orders or ask anything of you.”

With regards to free DLC and expansions, players can expect “nothing less” than what was delivered with The Witcher 3, which seems to indicate that there will be at least two paid expansions (if not more) along with numerous free updates. The game will also be “100 percent DRM-free” on PC. Also regarding its stance on microtransactions, the developer answered by stating, “Microtransactions? In a single player role-playing game? Are you nuts?”

Cyberpunk 2077 will also apparently be showcased behind closed doors at E3 2018 so expect some previews to come out. It’s in development for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. What are your thoughts on the showcase trailer? Let us know in the comments.
