NPD Analyst On Sony’s E3 Showcase: ‘Looks Like They’re Shifting Focus To More Short-Term Window’

NPD Group analyst believes Sony possibly has "tons of new things planned."

Let’s be real – Microsoft’s E3 2018 presser did quite some good in assuring players that it was still in the console race. Much of its efforts will yield positive results from 2019 onwards, which is interestingly not all that different from Sony. The latter’s E3 presser focused on a number of exclusives that will likely be out next year (if not later). Spider-Man is the sole exception as it arrives in September 2018.

That being said, titles like Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us: Part 2 and Death Stranding looked especially great. One has to wonder though – could the lower number of brand new game announcements feed into the PS4 winding down? Is it possible that these games will be it before preparations begin for the PlayStation 5?

Not quite. GamingBolt spoke to NPD Group analyst Mat Piscatella on whether Sony’s lack of new announcements meant it was busy preparing for the PS5. He replied, “I’m sure they have tons of new things planned but decided on a different approach in how they’re looking at E3 and what objectives they wish to accomplish.

“It looks like they’re shifting focus to a more short-term window with what they show at E3, which makes sense given how the show has shifted more towards being a consumer showcase.” Which would make sense if a number of the exclusives showcased at E3 end up arriving within the next year. It’s not impossible that this year’s presser was more of an experiment for Sony with a more traditional showcase happening next year.

Regardless, what do you think of Sony’s E3 2018 showcase? What do you hope to see from it in the future? Let us know in the comments below.
