Dying Light 2: Players Will Have To Manage Stamina Smartly During Chases, Can Upgrade It As Well

Players will have to think about how much stamina they're using up with the skills they use during chases.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is looking like a massive improvement over its predecessor, and though its headline addition over the first game may be its branching narratives, spearheaded by writer Chris Avellone, it’s making several important improvements in other areas as well. For instance- the stamina mechanic. As anyone who’s played the first Dying Light would know, stamina is an important part of its core gameplay loop. But stamina in Dying Light 2 will be slightly different as a mechanic than what we saw in the first game.

We recently sat down for an interview with the game’s lead designer, Tymon Smektala, who told us that stamina, which will be upgradeable, won’t be a factor during regular city traversal, making simple movement and exploration more open and less restrictive, but that smart stamina management and accordingly choosing your actions will very much be something players will need to keep in mind during set piece moments and chase sequences.

“We had stamina in the first game, but it wasn’t used to that extent,” Smektala told GamingBolt. “Right now, if you want to just traverse the city you don’t really have to bother with this. Because we understand being able to traverse the city is a staple in Dying Light. But in places like [in the E3 demo], or during chases, the amount of stamina you have will be tested. So you’ll have to use the skills that don’t use that much stamina to avoid making any mistakes, but you’ll also be able to upgrade your stamina as you play the game.”

In this very same interview with us, Smektala also spoke to us about a number of other things related to the game, such as its “modern dark ages” inspired weapon design, or how it’s co-op will be structured and will benefit from the game’s new narrative approach. Dying Light 2 is also, apparently, four times bigger than the first game, and will feature what are being called “parkour puzzles” for players to navigate.

Dying Light 2 is due out on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, though Techland haven’t yet announced a release date for the game. Our full interview with Tymon Smektala will be going live not long from now, so stay tuned to GamingBolt- it’s quite an interesting conversation.
