RAGE 2 Will Be Single Player Only, But Will Get Loads of Post Launch Content

Single player GaaS style games can work, so maybe RAGE 2 can pull it off too.

While Bethesda is increasingly adding multiplayer modes to its games – Wolfenstein: YoungBlood is co-opFallout 76 is a shared world shooter, and even DOOM Eternal has new multiplayer elements added to it – RAGE 2 will not have any multiplayer modes. It’s a single player only experience.

That said, it will still imbibe many modern Game as a Service (GaaS) style elements by way of constant updates and a long tail in terms of post-launch content and support. Speaking to AusGamers, id Software studio director Tim Willits said that the game is a strictly single player experience, but that it will have post launch content and updates, paid DLC, and community events and the like to keep players engaged over the long term.

“It’s a single-player game,” Willitis said. “We feel that we are offering many hours of game for the money, but we also want to have a longer tail on the game. We’ll have some free updates. And we’ll have paid updates. We have some community things too, so you can kind of feel that you’re part of a community. And we’ll talk about those later. But our focus is single player.”

Which is good to hear- we know that single player GaaS style titles can do well, thanks to the success of Final Fantasy 15 and Assassin’s Creed Origins. Who knows, maybe RAGE 2 will join that league too, once it launches next year for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
