Grand Theft Auto 5 Has Hit 100 Million Units Shipped, Take-Two Confirms

One of the highest selling games of all time continues to break records.

Centuries from now, when the world is little more than a husk of its former self as nuclear radiation poisons it to its very core and all remains of human civilization are nothing but dust in the wind, we’ll still be hearing whispers about how Grand Theft Auto 5 has crossed yet another sales landmark.

We last heard from Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, that as of May of this year, GTA 5 had crossed 95 million units shipped worldwide. One of the highest selling games of all time continues to sell more though, and how now crossed 100 million units in shipments, as was announced during Take-Two’s recent earnings call with investors. That is an insane number, but honestly, at this point, I doubt anyone is surprised even in the slightest. It has also become only the third video game ever to hit the 100 million mark, following Tetris and Minecraft.

This seems to have been driven by the continued success of GTA Online, which, according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, is going to continue to receive support from Rockstar. “Grand Theft Auto Online continue to exceed expectations in the second quarter as it has in every period since its release,” Zelnick said. “Recurrent consumer spending on the title grew sequentially and was close to flat year-over-year. During the quarter, Rockstar Games supported Grand Theft Auto Online with an array of new content, highlighted with the highly successful After Hours update, and they have much more planned going forward.”

So yeah, it’s been a very successful period for Rockstar and Take-Two (which is not exactly surprising, or even unusual). They also launched Red Dead Redemption 2 recently, which not only had the biggest entertainment three-day launch ever, but has also shipped 17 million units in just eight days, which means it’s already outsold the first Red Dead Redemption. Read more on that through here.
