Red Dead Redemption 2’s US Launch Month Sales Were More Than 3 Times as Much as the First Game

It also becomes the second highest selling game of 2018 in the US.

Red Dead Redemption 2

It should come as no surprise by this point that Red Dead Redemption 2 is breaking records left, right, and centre. After already having had one of the most successful opening weekends in entertainment media history, and following that up with shipping 17 million units in just eight days, we now have some more reports of the magnitude of its commercial performances.

NPD analyst Mat Piscatella has revealed (via VentureBeat) that in the United States, Red Dead Redemption 2 sold thrice as much in its launch month than the original Red Dead Redemption did back when it first released in 2010. And that’s with just nine days on the market being considered for its launch month sales. Piscatella also revealed that, as a result of this success, Red Dead Redemption 2 has immediately shot up to becoming the second highest selling game of 2018 to date in the United States, trailing behind only Call of Duty: Black Ops 4– both games were, not surprisingly, also on top of October’s NPD charts.

“With just nine days of reported sales, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the second best-selling game of October 2018 and is now also the second best-selling game year to date,” Piscatella said. “Red Dead Redemption 2 launch month sales more than tripled those of the previous title in the series, Red Dead Redemption, which launched May 2010.”

If you’re somehow wondering what all the fuss is about, you can read our review to find out why Red Dead Redemption 2 has been gaining all these plaudits, both critical and commercial. Meanwhile, with Red Dead Online’s launch just around the corner, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that it’ll be able to sustain its success fairly well for some time to come.
