In the crown of excellent first party exclusives on top of the PS4, one of the jewels that stand out the most is Horizon: Zero Dawn. Guerrilla Games’ open world action RPG was one of the best games of 2017, delivering excellent combat, a spectacular story, and exhibiting the sort of visual fidelity that few games have managed to surpass (or even match) till now.
The game came out exactly two years today, and to celebrate the anniversary, Guerrilla Games chief Hermen Hulst has put up an update on the PlayStation Blog. In the update, Hulst confirms that Horizon: Zero Dawn has managed to sell 10 million copies worldwide in the two years that it’s been out, before going on to give some interesting behind-the-scenes details about the game’s development- read more on those through the link above.
“It’s hard to believe that two whole years have passed since we released Horizon Zero Dawn,” Hulst wrote. “When the game launched on February 28, I was attending GDC and counting down the minutes with a group of fellow Guerrillas and Shuhei Yoshida. Early feedback suggested that we had something special on our hands, but we never suspected that we’d still be receiving daily messages of appreciation from our players in 2019.
“And yet, here we are, already well over 10 million copies sold worldwide; the idea that we were able to bring Aloy’s journey to so many players is astounding. We’ve been deeply moved by the enormous amount of fan creations you’ve posted online, as well as the heartfelt letters you’ve sent sharing your favorite moments from Aloy’s journey.”
Sony’s first party output has been top notch this generation, and Horizon: Zero Dawn is emblematic of that success- a completely new IP coming from a studio that had been known for making experiences that were totally different from what Horizon would go on to be. It spells exciting things for the future of PlayStation, and Guerrilla Games.
